Starting Monday, the Ohio Department of Health will stop daily updates of new coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and vaccinations and instead provide that information on a weekly basis.

The Ohio Department of Health's dashboard is found at coronavirus.ohio.gov. COLUMBUS, Ohio -

“Now, many communities, schools and businesses have responded to these changes by relaxing masking and social distancing and other restrictions,” Vanderhoff said. “Maybe you’ve allowed yourself a sigh of relief, and understandably so. The situation is improving. And our experience with COVID-19 is evolving from that of a pandemic to more of an endemic.

Using the data, counties are classified under the COVID-19 Community Levels risk system as low, medium or high. Vanderhoff said Ohio Department of Health officials will continue to monitor the numbers, as well as coronavirus in sewage - which can indicate if a spike is coming - and could increase reporting if cases or hospitalizations increase. Some of the changes announced Thursday are the result of public health officials drawing conclusions after the omicron variant surge, which was different from delta and other variants, Vanderhoff said.

“The other thing we have to bear in mind is we are in a very different position in dealing with the future waves of the virus because we have the benefit of our vaccine immunity,” Vanderhoff said. “We have increased our ability to test, including wastewater testing, which can be an early warning signal. And now, also, the growing availability of treatments, of therapeutics.”

Colds, flu and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, are endemic. Sometimes their transmission is low, but other times symptoms are serious, such as a severe flu season when many people die, he said.
