In celebration of Daisy Ridley’s 30th birthday, Mark Hamill recalls the time his Star Wars protege gave him a piggyback ride during the production of the sequel trilogy. Star Wars: A New Hope introduced Luke Skywalker as a humble moisture farmer on the planet Tatooine. Unbeknownst to Hamill’s character and the audience, that young farm boy was destined for so much more.
A New Hope kicked off the original trilogy and The Force Awakens began a new one. The latter introduced a desert dweller, Rey , unaware of their lineage and with whom the Force is very strong. Mirroring the original trilogy, the sequels drew Rey into the Resistance’s conflict with The First Order. On top of that, the films brought back Hamill’s Luke to serve as a mentor of sorts to his replacement in the narrative.
It’s no secret that Disney/Lucasfilm’s sequel trilogy has proven divisive among the fandom. The Rise of Skywalker may have marked the end of the Skywalker saga, but a galaxy far, far away continues to revisit it on Disney+ with shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hamill’s Luke has appeared in both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett thanks to the ever-evolving use of body doubles and CGI.
