StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds producer Alex Kurtzman reveals the deeper meaning behind the show's desert-landscape-meets-space poster: 'I think it spoke to the sense of nostalgia that very much permeates.'
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds producer Alex Kurtzman explains the message behind the show's poster. Set to premiere on Paramount+ in May, Strange New Worlds is the long-awaited spin-off to Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which introduced new iterations of Captain Pike , Number One , and Spock . There were rumblings of this trio getting a spin-off even before Discovery season 2 came to a close, but Strange New Worlds wasn't officially announced until May 2020.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will bring the franchise back to its roots in a major way by focusing on the exploratory adventures of the USS Enterprise. It is set 10 years before The Original Series, yet features a handful of characters with connections to that flagship show. In addition to Pike, Spock, and Number One, Strange New Worlds will introduce younger versions of Nyota Uhura , Dr. M'Benga , and Christine Chapel . There's no Kirk yet, but the show is just getting started.
So, we're gonna give you a first look at our key art. And we spend a lot of time thinking about what messages we wanted to convey, and I think the idea that our show speaks to the final frontier when it was really at its infancy, what it was just the beginning.
A common criticism aimed at the current swath of Star Trek shows - namely Discovery in its earlier seasons - is that it prioritizes action over exploration, which was a key facet of The Original Series. Luckily, it so far looks like Strange New Worlds is taking its cues from the show that kicked off the entire franchise. As Kurtzman said, Strange New Worlds holds a sense of hope, adventure, and exploration; in other words, it's classic Trek through and through.
Paramount+ has kept much of Strange New Worlds close to the vest so far, meaning fans haven't even seen a proper trailer yet. That's to be expected with the premiere still months away and new episodes of Discovery and Picard cropping up in between. Still, what few looks have been granted so far seem promising. Strange New Worlds can fill a hole in new Star Trek, and that's already clear from its first poster. Let's see what the trailer has to offer when it finally arrives.
