It’s time for Star Trek to revisit the Cardassians, the xenophobic species that defined so much of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s central conflict.

It's time for Star Trek to revisit the Cardassians, the xenophobic species at the heart of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's central conflict. Introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Wounded," the Cardassians were presented as a powerful adversary of the Federation, having engaged in an intense border war with Starfleet over several years. Not unlike the Romulans, TNG established the Cardassians as a paranoid, arrogant, highly secretive people.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The lore and society of the Cardassians would be developed exponentially on DS9. The titular space station was formerly known as Terok Nor, a Cardassian outpost in orbit of the planet Bajor, which the Cardassians had forcibly occupied for years. The Cardassians committed unspeakable atrocities against the Bajorans, a planet-wide trauma that would haunt the entire series.

With the exceptions of Dukat and Garak, the most notable Cardassian is likely Legate Damar . Originally just another one of Dukat's fascist thugs, Damar undergoes a remarkable transformation over DS9's run. An ardent Cardassian nationalist, Damar becomes disillusioned with the Dominion's treatment of his people and sparks a Federation-backed uprising on Cardassia Prime. He ultimately sacrifices his life for his people and becomes a martyr for the cause.

What Happened To The Cardassians After DS9? Cardassia Prime was very nearly wiped out by the Jem'Hadar and another enemy of the Federation, the Breen, in the final days of the Dominion War. DS9 ended before it became clear what became of the planet and its people after the war.

And yet there's an 800-year gap in the Cardassians' history. The rise and fall of fascist regimes is unfortunately a timely issue, and a story set after the events of Star Trek: Picard exploring how the Cardassian people rebounded from societal devastation would be a prime opportunity to tell the sort of real-world parable that Star Trek often thrives on. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine left the story of the Cardassians largely unresolved, and it's time for their second act.
