With cases on the rise, the Cardinal will play in front of an empty gym.

The Cardinal men’s basketball team is in the midst of a pause due to COVID cases within the program. Games scheduled for last Sunday and this Thursday against Cal and No. 5 UCLA, respectively, have been postponed. Stanford’s next scheduled game is Saturday at home against seventh-ranked USC.

Prior to Tuesday, Stanford had required fans to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter indoor sporting events, as well as wear masks when not actively eating or drinking. Santa Clara’s Thursday men’s game with Saint Mary’s was postponed Tuesday due to COVID cases within the Gaels’ program. Neither team has played since SMC beat Yale Dec. 28.

— The USF men’s basketball team reached a creative solution for losing this week’s game at Gonzaga, scheduling to play Loyola Chicago on Thursday in Salt Lake City.
