James Gunn reveals the incredibly strange role from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that was originally meant to be a cameo for Stan Lee.
One of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's strangest characters was originally meant to be a Stan Lee cameo. The movie, which was the second theatrical entry in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the third solo adventure for the titular gang of misfits. It follows the Guardians' desperate attempts to save Rocket's life, which involves traveling to the domain of the High Evolutionary , the hybrid animal-obsessed scientist who originally perpetrated torturous experiments on him.
Per The Direct, during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 commentary track, writer-director James Gunn spoke about the original plan for a potential Stan Lee cameo in the movie, which was written before Lee's death. He revealed that his own character Lambshank, a particularly grotesque creature from the High Evolutionary's menagerie, was originally meant for Lee.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT I originally wrote Lambshank, the character that I played, for Stan Lee because I wrote the movie before Stan passed on. And I knew he was also getting much older and it'd be harder to bring him to Atlanta to shoot, so I did a character that I could just animate and then have him do the voice and have a little Stan Lee-like face on that character.
Lambchop Would Have Been Stan Lee's Funniest MCU Cameo Stan Lee cameos have been a staple of the Marvel comic book movie landscape since before the MCU even existed. The writer-editor-publisher-producer extraordinaire has made cameos in Marvel-derived titles as varied as X-Men, Big Hero 6, Venom, and Avengers: Endgame. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise offered him some of his most interesting cameos.
Being a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast would have offered Lee his most amusing role in the MCU yet. The overpowering strangeness of the character would have doubled down on Gunn's habit of offering him offbeat characters. The uncanniness of hearing Lee's iconic voice emerging from such a grotesque creature would have highlighted the humor of the situation even more, if the cameo had actually been able to come to fruition.
