The artefacts, dating from 1500 BC to the 19th century, included gold jewellery, semi-precious gems, a Greek head sculpture and Roman coins

The Museum was made aware of suspicions that an unknown member of staff was stealing items from its collection as long ago as 2016, theAn antiquities expert became suspicious after seeing a piece of Roman jewellery on the auction website.The expert claimed they tipped off senior staff at the museum in 2020, but no action was taken until earlier this year, it is claimed.
The British Museum previously said it will be taking action against the unnamed staff member, while the matter is also under investigation by the economic crime command of the Metropolitan Police.“There is currently an ongoing investigation – there is no arrest and enquiries continue. We will not be providing any further information at this time.”
