Lee Jung-jae, who played Gi-hun in SquidGame, suggested to the series' creator that they open a theme park based on the Netflix show.
Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae knew the show would be a hit from the start and even raised the idea of having a theme park based on the series. Lee, 49, is an actor from South Korea who has starred in a number of films and dramas. He gained worldwide recognition this year when Squid Game took the world by storm and became Netflix's number one series to date.
The South Korean survival drama tells the story of a mysterious contest where 456 players participate in a series of children's games for a cash prize of ₩45.6 billion. The contestants soon learn that the games aren't as innocent as they sound, and the penalty for failing to advance is immediate and certain execution.
On the first day when we were shooting red light, green light, I saw the gigantic Young-hee robot and 456 people in green sweats running for their lives, and I suddenly got the feeling that it was going to be very big," he recalls."So I went and told [Hwang] and the crew, 'I think this is going to be really popular. You should make a theme park right now, you should make sure that that robot's there, and people could play the six games that are in this show.
Lee's intuition would prove to be correct, as Squid Game broke Netflix's records during its first four weeks of launch. It went on to become the most-viewed program in 94 countries, which is a feat for an Asian production. Barely three months since it was released, Netflix and Hwang are reportedly discussing Squid Game season 2 and season 3. If that pushes through, Lee will be reprising his role since the character's fate was left open-ended in the show's final episode.
Squid Game's phenomenal success has inspired its fans to recreate the titular Squid Games as seen on the show. It also spawned countless merchandise which fans flocked to consume, from the players' tracksuit to the Dalgona candy featured in the drama. That said, the idea of a Squid Game theme park isn't too far-fetched. Whether it will be made in Korea or somewhere else in the world, its millions of fans will surely flock just to experience the show in real life.
