The Spurs enter Monday’s game against Utah hoping to avoid the in-game slumps that led...

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, right, has remained patient with his young team as he preaches avoiding in-game lapses.Taking advantage of having his team’s undivided attention after a barrage of largely uncontested 3s in the fourth quarter doomed the Spurs to a 20-point loss in Orlando, coach Gregg Popovich gave the team yet another lecture on how the NBA plays a 48-minute game.

It happened in the first quarter against the Pelicans, when the Spurs fell behind 37-17. There was improvement early on in Orlando, where they only trailed by six after the initial period. But then things started to unravel late in the third quarter before falling apart completely in the fourth, when the Magic outscored the Spurs 39-24 after hitting their first eight 3-point attempts.

“We are still a young group, but we have smart players, young guys who want to listen and get better,” guard Josh Richardson said. “Hopefully, one of these days it really starts kicking in. I think it just takes us stringing together a couple of games where we do play that full 48 to see what it looks like, to see how hard you have to play the whole game. Then, hopefully, that becomes the standard.

Fueled by their strong start, the Pelicans led by as many as 23 points late in the third quarter and opened the fourth with a 19-point cushion.
