UPDATE: The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed it responded to a battery fire in an overhead bin on a flight that was diverted to Jacksonville International Airport
The flight was originally heading from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Orlando International Airport., the plane landed at JAX airport just before 4 p.m. Spirit Airlines sent Action News Jax the following statement about the cause of the fire:
“Spirit Airlines flight 259 from Dallas to Orlando diverted to Jacksonville International Airport following what’s believed to be a battery fire from a Guest item in an overhead bin that was extinguished inflight. The plane landed at JAX and taxied to the terminal without incident. We thank our crew and Guests for their quick actions to ensure the safety of everyone onboard, and we thank first responders for meeting the aircraft.
