A rising number of stretched households are turning to fraudulent insurance claims to help make ends meet, new data from a major firm suggests.
Zurich highlighted several cases, stating these were easily identified as fraudulent after some basic investigation.
In another case, the insurer said a DIY enthusiast attempted a £3,000 claim for the theft of his tools, but the date on the picture he sent as evidence of ownership was after the alleged theft had taken place. Another man claimed a carpet had been burned with hair straighteners, only for checks to reveal he had claimed for the same damage, using the same photos, with his previous insurer a year before.Scott Clayton, Zurich’s head of claims fraud, said many households were facing hardship due to the likes of spiking fuel prices and energy bills, adding this was “contributing to an increase in fraudulent claims”.
