Up to £20bn must be spent over the next decade plugging pipe leaks and rolling out water meters to avoid a future where households are forced to queue for bottled water on the street during heatwaves, officials have warned. That is the stark message from Sir John Armitt, chair of the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission , who has warned the UK’s water system is not prepared to cope with the coming impacts of climate change.after a summer of very little rain, the spotlight is on how well water companies are prepared to cope with such extreme weather.
The NIC has repeatedly warned that England faces “serious risks of water shortages” in the coming decade as summers become hotter and drier.
