"Justice Ginsburg was a pioneer for women's rights, for minorities' rights, for gender equity, for LGBTQ issues and that is why we felt she really deserved to be honored here locally," says Mel Blumenthal, President of the Women's Studies Advocacy Council.
With more than 1,000 women already honored in the Women’s Plaza of Honor on campus, Blumenthal says she and five other women came up with the special project to honor the"Notorious RBG." "So, the bench is a seater in kind of a garden section of the plaza. And it's going to be in combination of tile work, art work -- could be photos of Justice Ginsburg, quotes," says Blumenthal. She also adds that Santa Theresa Tile Work will also help in the project, which is a locally-owned, all-female run business.
"It is $15,000 for the bench that we are wanting to install in the plaza and we have a fund-raising deadline of January 31st. So, that's what we're shooting for." Once the money is collected, Blumenthal says some of the donors will get to have a say in the design of the bench that will honor RBG and the trailblazer she was.
