The union represents more than 10,000 pilots who work for the Dallas-based carrier, which said the looming threat won't affect operations. Southwest will continue to seek"an agreement that rewards our Pilots and places them competitively in the industry," said Adam Carlisle, Southwest's vice-president for labor relations, in a statement.
Under that act — which covers all U.S.-based airlines — employees have collective bargaining agreements, which unlike traditional contracts that expire, become amendable and remain in effect during negotiations. In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Southwest said it expects to report a net loss in the range of $725 million to $825 million in the fourth quarter of 2022, with roughly half of that due to lost revenue. In the third quarter, Southwest reported net income of $277 million on record operating revenue of $6.2 billion.
