But even while Love Field thrived, so did DFW. The bigger airport went from 60 million passengers in 2013 to 65 million in 2015. DFW surpassed 75 million passengers in 2019 and was one of the first major airports in the country to return to pre-pandemic passenger levels in April and May.

“I said to them, you are opening a can of worms, there are a lot of political sensitivities,” Weinstein said.Flying to two different airports just 10 miles apart would have once seemed contradictory to Southwest’s business model, but the COVID-19 pandemic changed that. Across town, DFW Airport has more than 160 gates in five terminals. It added four more gates in June and has preliminary plans for a sixth terminal that would eventually add 25 to 30 new gates.
