“That continued for decades. But back then it was still relatively new. It was a really fun time. We were full of piss and vinegar and just out to conquer the world.” Things weren’t always so smooth for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Even after Bruce Springsteen released “Born to Run” in 1975, bringing countless numbers of record label executives to the Jersey Shore looking for the next big thing, Southside struggled to break through.
“Steve was really the only executive that understood us,” says Johnny. “We were a working band that enjoyed playing in front of people. But Steve Popovich got it. He signed us and promoted us. And he was always on our side, always. He was one of the best people I ever met, especially in the music business.
