Southlake school trustees are the latest among North Texas districts to pass policies targeting the bathrooms and pronouns used by transgender students.
Bryan said the district’s policy language is “inclusive of all forms of discrimination and harassment and include all of the federally protected classes.”District leader Tamy Smalskas told the board that every report of bullying and harassment will be investigated.“I want the board to know that any changes to the gender-based harassment is protected under sexual harassment and the Title IX law,” she said. “CISD will keep all students safe from discrimination or harassment.
Pam Francis, a Southlake parent who reviewed the policy changes, said school should be a compassionate place where children feel accepted. But the board’s policy changes send a message that only some students are valued, she said. “I have never heard from a parent, a teacher or a student who complained about the rampant improper pronoun use plaguing our schools,” Francis said. “But I have heard from many, many parents and students who told me stories about how students were bullied or harassed because of their skin color, their religion or their LGBTQ status.”
