Madison Sparks, 23, is accusing South-Western schools of allowing her middle school teacher to sexually abuse her for years despite warning signs.

in 2012, she was a studious and athletic 12-year-old who had dreams of being a professional volleyball player, a photographer, a lawyer or even president of the United States.

“Along with holding accountable, I hold accountable the abundance of adults and staff and administration that had a duty to protect me and to say something and they didn't," Sparks told The Dispatch of her lawsuit.South-Western City Schools officials and Rutan's defense attorney could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday morning.

"While want a 'relationship' with the teacher, they don't want sexual contact, but that is what they get," Shakeshaft said. Rutan was Sparks’ track and basketball coach. On bus rides to and from athletic events, where other school staff was present, they would sit together and cuddle, according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, a teacher later admitted to Sparks that “everyone knew about Rutan and Madison—people were just afraid to do anything because of his popularity and influence in the district.”Rutan’s father was once a principal at South-Western, and his uncle was once a middle-school teacher there whom the lawsuit states was disciplined for inappropriate conduct and transferred to a different middle school.
