Sarita Zúñiga founded the Algeria Dance Company to give talented dancers the experience of a professional company.
Little girls dressed in black leotards and ballet shoes stepped past clogs, sandals and cowboy boots they’d worn from home. They set down shiny gym bags as they watched teen dancers in dance studio No. 1 at Sarita’s Dance Studio. They practiced steps as teens curtsied, twirled and spun across the black-matted floor to the searing sounds of “Europa ' by guitarist Carlos Santana. Ballet director Bryony McCullough counted, “5, 6, 7, 8 … we go right side, then left side.
“The change to being a woman really captures them.” Former dancers have opened schools of their own. One became a judge, and others earned doctorate degrees or are successful businesswomen. “Our goal is to help them achieve whatever they want to do,” she said. “You don’t have to be a dancer to be successful. We want them to learn commitment and to not give up.” In 1972, Zúñiga moved from Laredo to San Antonio in search of advanced classes to further her dance career.
