South Park's season 23 premiere proved that Trey Parker and Matt Stone do still have something to say

seemed to find more focus than the show had mustered in a couple years. Both last year’s premiere and this one regard undeniably grave, serious issues with a striking amount of focus—especially for a series that often spreads itself thin. Even better: With this premiere, Stone and Parker proved they actually have something to say.’s limitations in recent years has been its insistence on broaching tough, even painful issues—like mass shootings and—without actually engaging.

regarding the family-separation policy and the ways in which it mimics the use of Holocaust concentration camps, thegag is not exactly surprising—but Stone and Parker do pull it off with a characteristic smirk that somehow stops just shy of being heavy-handed. This week’s B plot, however, is a little less compelling. The show’s new opening credits welcome us back to Tegridy Farms, where Stan’s father, Randy, grows marijuana. But Randy has a problem: South Park residents have begun growing their own weed! And so Randy partners with Big Weed to end the home operations—by stoking fears that homegrown marijuana might be bad for kids.
