Over 20 years after Gladiator, Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix have reunited for another epic historical drama filled with full-scale battle sequences. Napoleon stars Phoenix as the French military leader and charts his meteoric rise and fall from power on the battlefield.
Ahead of the Napoleon release date on November 22, Scott revealed how many of the military leader's battles will be in the movie. In an interview with Total Film , the director said that, of the 66 total battles that Napoleon took part in, only six of them will be depicted in the movie, with each one staged differently and each one astonishing in their own way. Each of these battles was captured using 11 to 14 cameras which allowed Scott to shoot the epic war movie in only 62 days.
Every scene is geometry. By having 11 to 14 cameras, we shot Napoleon in 62 days. I’m doing Gladiator 2 now in 54 days, because I’m not doing 50 takes with one camera, on one shot, and then turning around. This normal fight [scene] that could take anything up to a month, I’ll take six days. So the savings are colossal.
What To Expect From Ridley Scott's Napoleon Movie Napoleon fought in numerous battles throughout his career, with Scott saying the total number is 66, though historical scholars estimate it is anywhere between 60 and 80 battles. Nevertheless, the prolific military leader took part in way too many battles to depict every one of them on screen in one movie.
