Many faith groups, including Christian denominations, still forbid women from attaining the highest levels of leadership.
The Southern Baptist Convention does not ordain women, banning female pastors in 2000. While some women are pushing to be accepted as imams to lead Friday prayers in the Islamic world, it is still a hotly contested issue among traditional Muslims.
The women are helping to lead their church during a critical time. Some churches are leaving the UMC over fears it is becoming more open to LGBTQ+ and diverse peoples. Steiner-Ball spent several years in Central Pennsylvania, graduating from Dickinson College with a bachelor’s degree in religion in 1984. She also graduated from Duke Divinity School with a Master of Divinity and from Wesley Theological Seminary with a Doctor of Ministry degree.

The Rev. Dr. Ketlen Solak was elected the first Black woman to serve in the Pittsburgh Episcopal Diocese, breaking through both the gender and race barriers. The Episcopal Church has ordained women to the priesthood for 40 years, but only white men previously served as bishops in Pittsburgh.
