A conservative-leaning volunteer parent group that has protested 'woke-ism' in public schools has set its sights on New York City's little-known Community Education Councils, which have some power over the city’s education policies.

Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2023.Days away from the deadline to cast ballots, some New York City parents say elections for little-known Community Education Councils are becoming the next front in the culture wars that have shaken school boards across the country.

Some parents argue the group has since taken on more radical positions that reflect messaging by far right leaders. “We look for candidates who support merit-based education rooted in strong academics, ones who want more access and opportunities to challenge students’ intellect and readiness, and won’t undermine it by lowering expectations,” said parent Yiatin Chu, co-founder and co-vice president of PLACE, a former member of CEC1, said in response to questions from Gothamist.

According to The City, only 2% of the more than 900,000 public school parents voted in the last CEC elections.
