James Chandler signed up to run the race before he received his orders. So he brought his jersey and ran 26.2 miles anyway. ChicagoMarathon
“The military is always in need of medical providers,” Chandler, who hails from Urbana, Illinois, told. “So as a unique provider, I decided it would be good to use my skills in a different setting.”
“I always tell people about Camp One Step, and they always say that it sounds so sad,” he said. “I’m like, ‘No, Disney World isn’t the happiest place on earth. Camp One Step is,’ and there is no amount I could ever give back to this place that would make up for what it does for these kids and for me.”
The idea was easier said than done. Where Chandler is currently based sits at around 7,500 feet above sea level. Not only would he have only a month to acclimate, it would also make the final weeks of training difficult.
