Scat and dogs: San Antonio Zoo releases horny toads into nature

A horny toad is seen Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, on a ranch in northern Blanco County. The San Antonio Zoo’s Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project aims to increase wild populations of the state reptile of Texas.SAN ANTONIO — Out in the middle of Blanco County, at a ranch enveloped in tiny cacti and brush, snakes and red ants, 50 horny toads are being released into the wild.

This marks the third release since the program began in 2017. So far, they have released just over 100 lizards. This time, the team will do both in one visit. The moment the new lizards are out and about, the team will search for lizard scat in other release areas nearby. To spread the cheer, the conservation team passes out the clear plastic boxes the lizards are kept in, and most of the attendees get to release one on their own by carefully removing the lid from the container, placing the lizard in one hand and lightly placing the little guy onto the ground.

No lizard is released too close to another. Each is at least a few yards from the next, ensuring that the new lizards can make it out on their own with little confrontation. But if two lizards do happen to cross paths, there shouldn’t be any issue. Those that were paired together at the lab are released around the same area, while others might have more distance between them.
