The yearly Armed Forces Day gathering of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team will start at noon May 20 in the hills’ Roberts Park.

Their names were John Togashi, Tad Masaoka, Shig Futagaki, and Lawson Sakai. They were members of the U.S. Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the segregated unit of Japanese Americans that was awarded 9,486 Purple Hearts, more than 4,000 bronze stars , 560 Silver Stars , 22 Legion of Merit medals, 12 Croix de Guerre medals , seven Presidential Unit Citations and 21 Medals of Honor, making them the most decorated military unit man for man in U.S. history.

It was a mission that never should have been attempted, but their commanding general — a Caucasian, of course — wanted to get his picture in the papers. He ordered them to assemble the next morning for a photo op, but only a handful showed up. Incensed, he turned on his executive officer and demanded to know why they weren’t there.

A year after that first planning meeting, which I was privileged to attend, the memorial — a tiny redwood sapling — was planted, and they’ve held a memorial service there every year ever since. That wasn’t when I fell in love with these men, though; it was the very first day I met them. After meeting all morning, we all were getting hungry, and they invited me to join them for lunch. The waitress messed up and brought us stuff nobody had ordered. I was all for sending everything back to the kitchen, but they refused.
