“Goodbye, Oakland” by Andy Dolich and Dave Newhouse lays out the tragic lack of love shown by teams that have called the city home.
It’s all laid out in a new book that couldn’t be more timely: “Goodbye, Oakland: Winning, Wanderlust and a Sports Town’s Fight For Survival,” written by the greatest Mr. Inside-Mr. Outside combination since Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis tore up the football fields for Army in the mid-1940s.
“Dave Newhouse knows more about Oakland sports than anyone, except maybe Andy Dolich, and they know everybody,” says Pete Wevurski, the Oakland Tribune’s former editor. And there are heroes, like former City Councilmembers Dick Spees and Ignacio De La Fuente, who struggled to prevent this mess from happening; Jerry West, who talked Warriors owner Joe Lacob out of trading away Klay Thompson; Jim Otto, aka “Mr.
