The young mountain lion discovered in a Bay Area classroom taken to the zoo’s wild animal veterinary clinic, Northern California’s largest.
Did you read about the young mountain lion that was found last week in an empty high school classroom in San Mateo County? Guess where the California Fish and Wildlife Department sent him after he was rescued? To the Oakland Zoo, which has a state-of-the-art, 17,000-square-foot veterinary hospital that’s the largest wild animal veterinary facility in Northern California.
It just shows how far the zoo has come since 1984, when it was virtually bankrupt and the national Humane Society named it one of the 10 worst zoos in the country. It was built on the old model, in which animals were kept in cages or, at best, enclosures where they could barely turn around, much less roam freely as they would in the wild. And lots of animals can’t handle solitary confinement; they need to be with their pack, family or herd.
The first big project was Mahali Pa Tempo in 1989, nationally recognized for its natural elephant habitat setting, followed two years later by New Gibbon Island, a lush island for white-handed gibbons. Then came Simba Pori , a 1.5-acre natural savanna and woodland setting; and Maayan Sun Bear Habitat, one of the largest sun bear habitats in North America.
