Smithills Hall, a Tudor manor house located on the edge of Bolton, is one of the most haunted places in Greater Manchester. From ghostly beings to strange incidents, this historic hall has a chilling reputation.
Greater Manchester is home to its fair share of haunted locations , from pubs with levitating pint glasses to music venues with reports of paranormal activity . But there’s one place which is particularly creepy, especially at Halloween when ghostly beings come out to play.
Different families from the local area came to own the hall over the years, including the Barton family who lived there for almost 200 years from 1485. It then entered a period of neglect before the Ainsworth family bought the hall in 1801. During the reign of devoted Catholic Queen Mary Tudor, Bolton farmer - and a Protestant - George Marsh was brought before Robert Barton in the hall’s Green Room. George was burned at the stake on April 24, 1555.
