Kelvin Sampson’s University of Houston Cougars are a couple days away from potentially being ranked as the No. 1 men’s college basketball team in America.The way that Sampson’sOnly Sampson’s team could shoot 32 percent from the floor, commit 23 turnovers and still prevail.
“It's a rental. We don't own it — we're just renting it. Somebody else is going to be No. 1,” said Sampson, discussing UH’s potential ranking on Monday. UH will soon have to be better than Kansas, Baylor and Texas in the same conference. So, yes, even temporarily being No. 1 can make a real difference.
Throw in the fact this season’s Final Four is in UH’s home city, and potentially being No. 1 in the country in late November sounds a little sweeter, even on a day when the Coogs shot 2-of-17 on 3-pointers. Sampson can clearly recruit, teach and reach today’s generation. But he still coaches the old way and has created a yearly powerhouse that wins with the old ways: hustle, defense, selflessness and more hustle.
