SmileMovie writer/director Parker Finn opens up about the film's bleak ending — including that he never considered a happy one. 'I considered a few different routes early on, but at a certain point it got kind of solidified...'

As the film makes its way to streaming, Smile writer/director Parker Finn explains the decision-making behind the film's bleak ending. The 2022 hit horror movie revolves around Sosie Bacon's psychiatrist Rose Cutter as a patient's brutal suicide in front of her passes on a curse involving a terrifying, unknown entity, leading her down a rabbit hole of madness in her hopes of breaking the fatal curse.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with Slash Film to discuss the film's digital release, Parker Finn opened up about Smile's bleak ending. The writer/director revealed that it was always the plan to close the film on a tragic note, believing that the "plot" and "themes of the film" made it make more sense to go for a darker finale than a happier one.

I knew from early on that the film was going to eventually wind up at its worst possible conclusion. That was always baked into the DNA of the story because it felt like there was just a chance to not necessarily do the thing that maybe audiences are hoping for, that it felt like it was earned through the plot and through the themes of the film. [T]here were a lot of different ways that the film was potentially going to get there.

Much of Smile revolved around Rose's inability to process her past trauma in a healthy manner, and how she sought a job in her profession in order to allow her to help others where she can't help herself.

Will A Smile 2 Happen? As cynical as it may seem, another strong reasoning for Smile's bleak ending is leaving the door open for an inevitable sequel, with Joel now being the possessor of the curse. Gallner has confirmed his interest to see what comes next for his character in a potential sequel, while Finn has also teased ideas for a Smile 2, including unexplored lore cut from the first film due to both budget constraints and story concerns.
