Loss of taste and smell are far less likely with Omicron and its subvariants than earlier versions of the coronavirus, a new study finds.
, said lead study author Dr. Daniel Coelho. He is a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, in Richmond.
Rates of smell and taste loss were 17% for Omicron, compared with 44% for Delta and 50% for Alpha, the investigators found."As the pandemic continues and new variants emerge, this is very good news for patients," Coelho said."We now know that each variant has a different risk factor for associated smell and taste loss, and have reason to believe that newer variants are less likely to impact smell and taste.
