Shopping Essentials: ‘Slugging’ may be a skin remedy trend on TikTok but it’s nothing new
“The practice of slugging has recently soared in popularity online and is a K-Beauty trend,” double board-certified dermatologist Dr. Monica Li said. “Depending on where an individual is experiencing dryness, slugging can be directed to affected area and can be an effective way to help lock in moisture on the skin.”
Although slugging a legit approach in the dermatology world, the practice now has a moniker on the online domain. “The practice of slugging is something that dermatologists have recommended as a technique for many many years to moisturize the skin,” said Li. “We just didn’t have that name for it.”Article contentTo slug, you apply a water-based moisturizer to your face then seal it overnight with an added thick ‘slug’ layer of ato lock in the moisture. Li says this process enhances the effectiveness of moisturizers.
The dermatologist likens slugging to “a turbocharged, hydrating facial mask which enhances the hydrating effects of the products underneath” the slug layer.Li said the approach is often recommended for patients experiencing eczema, which has seen an influx with patients having it on their hands due to frequent handwashing during the pandemic.
The Vancouver-based dermatologist suspects the term slugging refers to the thick top layer added to your skin which is similar to slug-like activity. But, she cautions, slugging is not to be confused with snail/slime serums that are also popular with some beauty influencers.
