The fiscal 2024 spending plan includes the city’s first investment in legal homeless camps, but the details are thin.
“We’ve been hearing about sanctioned camping for a while now,” west-side council member Victoria Petro said in a statement. “The city’s funding to design such a program provides temporary solutions until we can adequately house individuals experiencing homelessness across our state.” Mendenhall, meanwhile, has said facilitating a sanctioned encampment falls outside of the city’s scope.
