“This was the first time they saw the benefit of what we did in 2019,” Patrick told KXAN-TV in Austin last month when asked about homesteaded property owners finally seeing relief in their tax bills after years of promises. “In a year where inflation is 9 percent, name something that you spend money on that costs you less this year,” said Dale Craymer, president of the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association. “And for a lot of folks, it's their property tax bill. Everything else is going up. That really is an incredible accomplishment.
With no state income tax, Texas relies more heavily on property taxes and sales taxes to fund government. Yet even among the seven other states that don’t have state income taxes, Texas has the highest property taxes for homeowners, according to the Tax Foundation. How that tax cut happens is still unclear. Already state lawmakers are proposing plans for the state to put more money into public schools to reduce the share of property taxes charged by school districts. Other plans include increasing homestead exemptions, sending rebate checks to homeowners and even cutting sales taxes to help renters.
