Al igual que muchos otros países, a China le preocupa que Afganistán, con el Talibán en el poder, se vuelva a convertir en un nido de terroristas. China le ha advertido a los talibanes que Afganistán no puede convertirse en trampolín para lanzar ataques en Xinjiang como hizo Osama bin Laden al tramar los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre del 2001.
Una amenaza más probable es la propagación de una ideología fundamentalista islámica en Pakistán y el Asia Central, donde China ha invertido con fuerza y ha tratado de forjar alianzas.
El Talibán podría ser un socio incongruente para China ya que su filosofía está totalmente basada en la religión, algo diametralmente opuesto a la visión china de un estado ateo bajo la hegemonía del Partido Comunista. Ello sin embargo no ha impedido que los líderes chinos, en sentido pragmático, hayan tratado de tener buenas relaciones con los talibanes.
