Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says a common goal must be to 'help the British economy off its immigration dependency'. More on his speech to the CBI:

An important speech for Sir Keir Starmer, whose party is well ahead in the polls and is now getting a hearing from business leaders as a potential next government.

He told business leaders that despite acute workforce shortages in many sectors, their goal should be “to help the British economy off its immigration dependency to start investing in training up workers who are already here”.It’s quite a journey for Sir Keir and his party on the issue which some members of the shadow cabinet have told me they feel weakest.

Sir Keir dropped the pledge to “make the case for freedom of movement” as leader last year, saying he accepted the British people did not want a renegotiation with the EU. He leaves options open in the short term, saying the current shortage occupation list does not work quickly enough. But Sir Keir is pre-empting any attempts to suggest he’ll go backwards on Brexit.

The Labour leader said the current deal with the EU was"not working well", but insisted his party's position was not about re-joining but about"making Brexit work".
