The popular Russian singer, who fled the country over her opposition to the Ukraine war, was seen in Kasatkina’s box on Sunday.
Top Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina has been outspoken in her opposition to the war in Ukraine, and her stance has brought her some prominent supporters.
A Justice Ministry statement at the time placed her on a list of foreign agents on the basis that she “openly supported Ukraine, held concerts in unfriendly countries while speaking against the special military operation and received support from foreign sources.” The 46-year-old has sold over three million records, and won the Best Russian Act award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards.She posted a photo to Instagram last week which showed her posing alongside Kasatkina and Olympic figure skater Natalia Zabiiako.
Those labelled foreign agents are often subject to police searches, among other punitive measures, and many have been forced to leave the country as a result. Kasatkina said she wanted to train and play against players “who don’t have to worry about being bombed”.Zemfira and Daria Kasatkina have both been outspoken against the Ukraine war.Svitolina’s victory sets up a politically charged quarterfinal clash against Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, who has been combative in her responses to questioning on the war.
