Alphabet has fired a half dozen of its Washington, D.C. lobbying firms as scrutiny over the technology sector grows among Congress and regulators, the Wall Street Journal reported on June 12.
The changes are led by Karan Bhatia, who heads policy and government relations for Google, Alphabet's search-engine division. Bhatia, who came from General Electric, is also reorganizing the company’s in-house policy team, leading to staff departures.The U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have divided up the biggest tech companies for potential antitrust probes.
The DOJ has jurisdiction of Google, which has been the target of complaints by Oracle and others in terms of the dominance of its search engine and other services.
