Founder of local non-profit receives Silent Heroes award.
There are a number of people who do extraordinary things across the Wiregrass, and News 4 along with the Wiregrass Electric Cooperative want to highlight their achievements as our area’s “Silent Heroes.”
“The first thing they say when they come in is ‘what we eating? So we feed them, of course,” explains Patterson, who is both the founder and executive director of the non-profit. “I’d see kids in the streets running around any time of the night . I’d ask them what they were doing in the street,” he says.
“A lot of our younger kids struggle with reading, we have 9th graders reading at a 2nd grade level,” Patterson explains, “we have opportunities with barbers that spend time with the kids, they read a book while they get a haircut—the haircut is actually free if they read the book."We have a lot of young people, especially a lot of young boys -- the fathers aren’t really present in the home.
