The would-be criminals attempted to clone the car keys.

Car thieves were foiled when attempting to steal a Knightswood motor by 'key signal cloning' after the owner had both keys to the vehicle in a Faraday bag.

The brazen plan to take the car from the driveway of the Kestrel Road home reportedly took place at around 3.30am on Monday morning. The would-be criminals attempted to clone the car keys by evading the locked six-foot gate and placing a 'device' at the front door of the property. It is thought the device was trying to clone the signal of the keyless car entry system in order to open and then start the car.A spokesperson said: “Around 3.30am on Monday, May 29, police received a report of the attempted theft of a car from outside a property on Kestrel Road, Knightswood, Glasgow. Some keyless cars unlock automatically when their key is physically close to the car.

Smart criminals are using relay devices to make car systems believe a key is nearby by cloning its signal.
