"How come," a fellow exile in this vale of tears asked me,"how come you don't do a piece about power mowers?"He swore up and down that he was a loyal homo sapiens. Even claimed he belonged to an underground organization dedicated to the overthrow of the gas-driven rotary mower and the eventual liberation of people. But you never know whom you can trust these days.
When I stopped to commiserate with him, he drew me aside and said:"Would you believe it? One day last summer I spent two hours trying to start that grass-eating Frankenstein. At last I gave up and went down to the tavern to cool off. When I came home there was my poor little wife, just finishing the yard.
"Nobody owns a mower," the man said."It owns you, body and soul. When it doesn't work, I feel like a fool. When it does, I feel like a robot." I didn't tell him the worst. That whenever a heroic individual, his brain not fully saturated by mower-exhaust chemicals, dares to strike a blow for freedom, he is brutally punished.
