Miller’s longtime political consultant, Todd Smith, has come under scrutiny in the past. In mid-January, Smith was indicted on theft and bribery charges related to“I don’t think he’s done anything wrong,” Miller told Lubbock radio host“Nothing’s changed,” Miller said in a February interview with The Dallas Morning News. “This is the same old Democratic playbook.”
Running for a third four-year term, Miller has been hit hard on ethics by his opponents. Southeast Texas state Rep. James White, mounting a major Republican primary challenge, accused Miller of corruption and hurting Texas farmers and ranchers. “Those are very, very callous comments by the Commissioner to just chalk all of this up to a political hit job,” White said in an interview, adding that Miller is “discounting [and] dismissing … the cries of potential crime victims.”
It remains to be seen how the indictment following allegations that Smith misused his boss’ office will translate at the polls. Miller has the endorsement of former president Donald Trump and a lead in polls among Republicans, though 63% of GOP voters say they’re not sure whom they’ll support in the primary. The incumbent draws support from 25%; White from 7%; and Brenham farmer-rancher Counsil, 5%, according to a January“As far as this race goes, Sid Miller will run first.
