The New York Yankees are 7 1/2 games out of the Wild Card race with 17 games remaining in the regular season.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked beforeabout toeing the balance between penciling in his best player and shutting him down, ensuring that Judge won’t aggravate his toe or get hurt in any other way. He said the health of his players is most important at this stage of the campaign, but that the Yankees are trying to win games. Judge being in there and playing at a high level gives them their best shot to do that.
As Boone alluded to, Judge isn’t the type of player to willingly call it quits before Game 162. Even when this team is officially eliminated from the Wild Card race, he’ll still be giving it his all, lobbying to be in the lineup every day. It’s hard not to watch Judge — knowing he’s been playing through pain since returning from the IL on July 28 — and think it’s 100 percent a good idea for him to play his hardest the rest of the way, though.
