Nature research paper: Short tRNA anticodon stem and mutant eRF1 allow stop codon reassignment

Light microscopy , scanning and transmission electron microscopy . The DAPI-stained and Giemsa-stained cultured cells and parasites from the host insect hindgut . Promastigote flagellates dominate in the culture , while the epimastigotes are more frequent in the insect gut , although they are also present in the culture . The cyst-like amastigotes are present in both the culture and host-derived smears . The nucleus and the kinetoplast DNA are labelled with arrow and arrowhead, respectively.

The scanning electron micrographs show a highly variable length of the flagellum in promastigotes and the cyst-like amastigotes . The longitudinal section thru the cell reveals a deep flagellar pocket , oval nucleus , elongated mitochondria , oval glycosomes , and numerous dense acidocalcisomes . The cross- and longitudinally-sectioned external flagellum is equipped with a prominent paraflagellar rod , which is absent in the part of the flagellum within the flagellar pocket .
