Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani, left, celebrates with Andrew Velazquez, right, after scoring on a single by Luis Rengifo as Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu walks back to the mound during the sixth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in Anaheim, Calif. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Every fifth or sixth day its team is in town, Angel Stadium hosts a show unlike any this sport has ever seen.
Ohtani owned the Astros in an awesome display of his two-way dominance. The reigning American League MVP struck out 12 across six overpowering innings on the mound. Ohtani drove in two runs, scored another and struck two hits, almost singlehandedly handing Houston a 7-1 loss at Angel Stadium.Ohtani carried a scoreless streak of 33 ⅔ innings into Wednesday’s start. He had not allowed an earned run since June 9, a span of four starts and 26 ⅔ innings.
Ohtani struck out five of the first 11 Astros he saw, settling into something resembling a duel with Houston starter Cristian Javier. Javier struck out 10 but survived just 3 ⅔ innings, placing undue burden on a bullpen that could not handle it. Reliever Bryan Abreu surrendered four runs in the sixth that turned the game farcical.
