Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, shown speaking during an immigration town hall meeting in August, received approval for $2.2 million to cover overtime by deputies at the Bexar County Jail.SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar has been tasked with running the county jail for the next several weeks with a half-million fewer dollars for deputies’ overtime than he requested.
Instead, the Commissioners Court approved the county staff’s recommendation to authorize $2.2 million, enough to pay deputies for an estimated 53,658 overtime hours. Commissioner Justin Rodriguez said the court is comfortable supporting the jail staff if it exceeds $2.2 million, but that commissioners would rather see the sheriff’s office manage with the amount approved so far.
