BREAKING: A shelter-in-place order has been issued as a result of a HAZMAT situation involving a car crash in an area southeast of the City of Tucson.
Authorities in the Tucson area have issued evacuation and shelter-in-place orders for different parts of the city as a result of a HAZMAT situation.
According to officials with the Tucson Fire Department, there is a HAZMAT and brush fire incident along the I-10, near Rita Road to the southeast of the Tucson metro area. In a statement, officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety say they are investigating a collision involving a commercial truck tanker that rolled over in the area, and the tanker is leaking hazardous material. DPS officials did not specify what hazardous material is leaking.
Officials with the University of Arizona Police Department say people within a one-mile radius of the area are asked to shelter in place, and turn off any heaters or AC units that bring in outside air. In addition, University of Arizona Police officials say the Pima County Sheriff's Department is asking all personnel at the UA Tech Park to evacuate. UA Tech Park is located close to the incident scene.
