The federal funding is through NRCan’s Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative, which supports establishing a nationwide fast-charging network for EVs. For the Shell chargers located in British Columbia, that province is kicking in $625,000 as part of its CleanBC Go Electric program.
Martin said that when infrastructure is eventually in place and the economics of EVs “make a lot of sense,” government incentives may not be required but “right now, they make a huge difference.” There are about 16,000 charging ports in 6,800 locations in Canada, and 90 per cent of them are in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
Other provincial or federal funding announced during EV Week to help companies install new chargers includes $1.7 million in B.C. for 128 new chargers; $55,000 for 20 Level 2 chargers in Halifax; $2 million for up to 250 chargers across Prince Edward Island; $2.5 million for up to 400 chargers across Manitoba and Saskatchewan; $765,000 for 117 chargers in Ontario; and $350,000 to New Brunswick Power for 52 chargers for its fleet of EVs and employee workplace charging.
