Shein vows 'whistleblower' help as it admits worker abuse at garment factories 👗
The company faces sharp criticism over its environmental and governance record, including exploitation of workers making their garments and copyright theft.
Shein makes billions of pounds of profits by unveiling thousands of new designs on its addictive website every day and selling them cheaper than anyone else. Shein was last valued at $50bn in early 2021; that same year, revenue surged 57 per cent to $15.7bn. It has also faced claims that garments exported abroad have been made with cotton from China’s Xinjiang region where production of the cloth has been linked to allegations of forced labour against Xinjiang’sThe retailer insists it takes steps in all its markets “to ensure we comply with local laws and regulations”. On its website it says it carries out regular audits aimed at “ensuring a zero-tolerance policy for ‘forced labour’ and other environmental and social concerns”.
Adam Whinston, Shein’s global head of ESG , said: “We take our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of workers at all our suppliers very seriously. Through Shein’s responsible sourcing programme we have been working diligently with our contracted partners to improve welfare and working conditions.
“We are now looking to double our investment in the SRS programme to improve supplier management further.” He added: “While the audit did reveal an issue with working hours, this has been raised with both manufacturers and we have significantly scaled back our orders from them until they take effective action.”
